7 Reasons Why NOW is the
BEST TIME EVER
to JUMP into the Health Market!
I can’t help it. Talk about writing for the health market – and I just LIGHT up!
Maybe it’s because I’ve been in the health area for almost a decade as a freelancer – and two decades as a marketer …
… Maybe it’s because I see the health arena just growing … Growing … and did I mention G-R-O-W-I-N-G?
… Or maybe it’s because I’m just a health nut at heart!
Whatever the case – I can tell you this for a certainty:
If you don’t make the decision to JUMP into the health field RIGHT NOW – you’re doing a serious disservice to your bank account!
Recently, I spoke at the AWAI 2008 Fast Track to Success Boot Camp – and I gave the attendees seven of the best reasons I could think of to niche yourself in health. And I want to share them with you too. So here goes …
Reason #7
One of the fastest growing markets in America –
so TAP THAT WALLET!
Over 78 million Americans born between 1946 to 1964 make up the “Baby Boomers” – and THOUSANDS of these folks are turning 50 each and every day!
With a longer life expectancy – they’re looking for ways to stay healthy and get more out of life. These folks are not the “over the hill” gang – they’re your CASH COW!
Reason #6
You can BE your market!
If you’re already a Baby Boomer – you’ve got an inside track to understanding your market.
You’re experiencing new aches and pains anyway – so why not use that first-hand knowledge and experience to make some serious MOOLAH!
Reason #5
“Niche-ing” – is the key to RAPID success!
A funny thing happens when you create exclusivity – you get MORE business!
When I repositioned myself as “a copywriter who specializes in the alternative health field” – I got MORE jobs than when I was a general “take whatever comes my way” copywriter! In fact …
… When I “niched” myself (ow, that sounds painful, doesn’t it?)… I actually DOUBLED my income in one year – and doubled it AGAIN the following year! Woo hoo! Specificity sells!
Reason #4
Alternatives to drugs … surgeries …
and even doctors are hot … Hot … HOT!
This booming over-50 market is eager to find natural remedies that can help them say “Bye Bye Bypass” and going under the knife.
Plus, they’re sick and tired of taking fistfuls of prescription drugs… and spending hours … days … or months in doctor’s visits and hospital stays!
(By the way “Bye Bye Bypass” and “If You’re Sick and Tired” were 2 of my headlines that KICKED-BUTT in the health market!)
And another thing:
These folks got the purchase power – even in a recession — to pay dearly for natural remedies that really work! Ka-ching! That means steady work FOR YOU!
Reason #3
Publishers and supplement companies are
DESPERATELY SEEKING good writers!
Demand is at a premium for health copywriters who can bring in the bodies through the front door. But …
… There’s even greater opportunities for newer writers too! How you ask? Well …
… Once a client gets a new customer – he wants to continue selling to him as his “house-file.” And the client doesn’t want to pay “l’il ole moi” the hefty copywriting fee I charge for an acquisition package. Noooohhh …
… He’s looking for someone more reasonably priced (aka cheaper) to write renewal promotions and other cross-selling opportunities to his existing customers!
That gives YOU a great opportunity to get in the “back door” and do your THANG! And when you impress the client – you’re that much closer to landing the bigger, sexier promo jobs!
Reason #2
You get to sample NEW products
BEORE they hit the market!
The truth is: Supplements ain’t cheap! So how cool is it when your clients send you FREE 30 … 60 … even 90-day samples of the product you’re working on!
That’s a mega savings on your personal vitamin, herb and nutritional product stash each and every year!
And you’re at least one step ahead of the pack in your goals of unclogging your arteries … relieving joint pain … sleeping better at night … thinking sharper … and of course — looking younger than the age on your driver’s license!
And my FAVORITE reason for JUMPING into the health market full steam and head first is …
Reason #1
You get an honorary “doctor” status –
without paying the high tuition fees!
Your friends and family will flock to you for advice and remedies to cure their health problems – because they really think you’re an EXPERT!
You wouldn’t believe how many of my guy friends secretly asked me for natural remedies to prevent baldness – or more info about the natural male potency product called “horny goat weed!”
And my phone rings off the hook from girlfriends looking for natural remedies to help with their menopause symptoms – especially their “personal summers!”
Even my husband – who doesn’t put much stock in alternative medicine – frequently comes to “Dr. Copywriter” for remedies that keep him playing and competing in basketball tournaments with our 17-year-old son!
And it’s pretty cool to know that instead of Advil – I can get rid of my headache with magnesium …
… Pass on the Coumadin and naturally prevent blood clots with Nattokinase …
… And for the first sign of a cold – I’ll skip those over-the-counter drugs and just load up on my beta glucan!
So there you have it! If I haven’t convinced you the health market – especially the alternative health market is the HOT SPOT for 2009 and beyond – well … good! That means they’ll be more jobs and moolah for ME to rake in!
Here’s to Creating Success Your Way!

Hi Caroline,
I’ve been thinking about switching from writing about conventional medicine (or pushing drugs as I call it) to writing for the alternative health market (a personal interest of mine for over 25 years) for some time now.
Reading your article convinced me that now is the best time to jump right into this niche. Thanks so much!
Warmly,

Carline,
As always your enthusiasm is contagious!
I need to write more for the alternative health market, I’ve had a few successes there, but I’d like to focus on it exclusively.
Thanks for the tips!

Hi Carline,
thanks for the article. I’m currently working on a project with a friend that fits into #4. And I’ve been wanting to write for the alternative health care field for some time. So thanks so much for the tips. Would you mind if we used this article for our site at http://www.bestwebpresence.com. I’m sure our readers would love to hear this!

HI,
I think you should make an info product on how to write for the alternative health market.
It seems a bit overwhelming to think about writing for that market when you have never touched it before.
Something that amazes me is that you don’t put out your own supplement. Clayton has something in the works but seems to be keeping a tight lid on it.
If I had your experience I certainly would. You know the maket well enough to KICK BUTT. . . damn it.
You should have mentioned the effect the lousey economy is having on that industry.

I always look forward to your insights, especially on alternative health which is one of my 2 niches.

To #6 regarding the lousy economy. My sales have gone up enough in the last four months that I was able to retire from my day job. I’m strictly selling information.
I agree with you wholeheartedly that its an area where content is king, so you better know what you’re talking about.
The best to you.

Carline,
You have inspired me to focus on this area a lot harder! I’m a retired chiropractor, and alternative health has been MY passion for more than 35 years. After a 6-year stint as a newspaper journalist, I know I can write. And boy, do I have some interesting case studies from my practice. I just need to learn the marketing lingo! Thank you for your encouragement and advice in this area. I just wish I had heard of you a lot sooner!

Carline -
I love your article! I’ve been a nurse for over 20 years and have embraced alternative medicine with great effects in my own life. I’ve been writing in the health field online for about 2 years now. My members are finding it more and more lucrative with each passing month. No matter the economy, people need their health in order to go to work, keep the house and run after their kids.
Have a healthy week!
Warmly,
Gail

To: John — Great idea about writing a report for the health market — and even launching a vitamin biz. Need to find time to do both.
To: Everyone else — Glad you found the article useful and motivating! Take care,

Thank you Carline, I always enjoy your in put and find them of use. I do have a question, however, since my age is beyond the baby boomers that you speak of, have you encountered the less scrupulous companies making claims that simply are not true? If so, what do you do when it comes to a lucrative contract? How do you find out which are the companies with integrity and the ones without? I lied, that’s three questions. Thanks,
John

We are entering an exciting new age in alternative health remedies, especially when comes to saying “Bye Bye Bypass” and going under the knife!
Comment by John Manley | Healthy-Conversions.com — December 10, 2008 @ 1:20 pm
Great piece. Real nice encouragement.
I’ve been working exclusively as a alternative health copywriter for two years, now. Ended up working on my own info-projects for a while and spending time with my newborn, but am going back 100% freelance Jan 2, 2009.
Another reason I’d add, is just that there is so much "misdeeds" (to put it lightly) going in the conventional medical industry. The only way to topple the _dependency_ on drugs/surgery (and all their side-effects) is by effectively marketing alternatives.
I even hate the word "alternative." I prefer "natural." There are so many modalities, yet drugs/surgery like to pretend they are the "only" or at least the "main" — when outside of a acute emergencies, they don’t do a good job.
And for goodness sakes! I wish the world would wake up and realize that alternative health isn’t all about prevention. It’s about cures!
Time for a major global shift. I’m glad to be a part of it.

This is a great article.
Yeah, it is a 30 billion dollar industry and the aging baby boomers are the force driving it becasue of the "desire" to look and feel younger.
Natraceuticals and Cosmeceuticals will forever be heavily powered by the the the strong desire to look and feel good.
With the internet, information is easily available to the ordinary "average joe the plumber" both here and in the 3rd world countries hence they are now easily reached cum educated.
Hey Caroline, your writtings are like swords that pierce through every iota of doubth and objections your average reader has anyway.
I am not a copywriter. I really enjoy the "art" a lot.
I read some of your controls. They are heavy duty!
Masterpiece!

I had to laugh when I read #6. Yeah, I am my market. Well, kind of. Over 50, no aches and pains, size 2, take no meds. OK, I’m what my market wants to be. But I thought it was a funny perspective.
Great article with good food for thought. I loved your November update too.

Hey Carline,
Great article. I run a fitness boot camp in Orange County, mostly women (this is a Health niche, right?)
Any ideas on how I can "niche" it and create more exclusivity?
Or is this as "niched" as it gets?
Have a great 09!

HI,
I enjoyed your article. I have been studying natural ways of living for some time (it’s a passion of mine). I have run into some questionable information in the past, though; have any ideas on finding trustworthy sources?
I am new to the arena of marketing and writing. I always wanted to, but I have been unsure how to start. My husband just set up a website for me to develop. I have years of personal experience and want to help people.
Thanks for the motivation,
Yadi.

Hi Carline
I have always been fascinated by the alternative health area of medicine. I studied naturapathy for awhile and had a very successful website for three years on alternative therapy.
Perhaps it is time to renew this passion and see where it may go.
All the best

Dear Caroline
Since my copywriting career has began to take off, I had
yet to really find the “niche” I liked the best. At 50, I am a “boomer” as well.
Your article concerning the alternative health niche really
helped push me over the edge. What was a huge motivator as well was part of my own experience.
I had never heard of or experienced a “cluster” or “suicide”
headache in my life untill a month ago. When I first sought help, thinking I simply had a “super sinus headache” they told me I had a sinus infection.
The first thing I was perscribed was prednisolone and
antiboitics. The first day “blister pack” of 6 tabs, I got
total relief. The second was the same. As I “tapered down”
from 6,5,4,3,2,1 daily dose of steroids, the headache
came back the third day, and continued every day, at the same time, every day. The pain was totally intolerable.
Finally after a week, I went to the emergency room.
After a shot eased the pain somewhat, the Doc sent me home with a script of Loratab 10. The very next day, at the same time again, I had another “cluster.”
The pain med barely helped at all…I could see why some people had comitted suicide with this pain. It was as if a
red hot poker was being shoved into my right eye. Two hours,
is like forever with this much agony!
Finally, durring a relief period, I was searching in alternative health cures for ANYTHING that would work. A
neurologist’s footnote article said that sometimes vigorous
exercise or sex (orgasm) could break the “cycle” of attacks.
Anyway that night, I went to my wife, and nature took it’s course. The next day, I somehow knew that the “cycle” of
cluster headaches had been broken!
It worked! I have not had a single headache since. Please note: this is no joke! “Cluster” headaches are so severe,
that most people would do ANYTHING, to break their “cycle.”
This is meant to help other people who have suffered from such, to try it themselves, and see if it works for them.
Sicence has no “cure” from this terrible disorder, only
a few things, help different people. The point of all
this is: sometimes the very best “cures” are all natural, the LORD provides ways that work, which science still does
not understand.
Your article pointed out to me, that people prefer natures
cures for ailments, instead of drugs and pills with side effects.
Durring week-ends Doctors are not available, much of the time, and it was a week-end when this occured. This is why
I was searching for “natural” or alternative helps.
As a copywriter myself, I now know which niche, I will do most of my work in. Nothing proves to someone which is best
for them, better than first-hand experience.
Thank you for underscoring that which helps more people. For as a Minister as well, to make a living doing what I love, and diectly helping my brothers and sisters, get better naturally - is a very easy choice, for me.
