Clayton,

Thank you for this great article. I use my kids all the time as coaches on persuasion skills - but I can always use more tactics - both as a mom and health copywriter.

When I interviewed Parris Lampropoulis for my ebook on health copywriting he provided a great insight: Take on the perspective of the toughest, hardest-boiled prospect in formulating your argument and writing your copy.

Being able to see things from a skeptic's perspective - and as a passionate advocate - can make for powerfully persuasive copy. I'm trying to straddle these two and your breakdown of what to include to do so helps immensely.

This is good stuff. Sometimes people get the impression that direct-response copy is all all shrieking emotional hot-buttons... but in some cases the way to get to the hot buttons is with rational arguments where we share our viewpoint. So perhaps while people take action for base emotional reasons their emotions can be triggered by well-reasoned arguments more effectively than by showing the telegraphed future benefits of buying the "get rich" advice - sports cars, blonds, and boats.

I'm of the mind that the more down-market and targeted at slack-jawed buyers the product is the more likely pictures of effortless thinness, easy wealth, and six-pack abs are to get past the B.S. filters. When we move upmarket people need to feel they are making a rational choice to put their money into... as if the opportunity will evaporate or something - when in truth the opportunities to BUY virtually any of the benefits any of our offers sell can easily be found on the internet, often sold for fewer dollars. It's the immediacy and the appearance-of-truth in the moment that counts to get the sale.

Clayton:
I am a recent graduate of AWAI. I also have a BA in Ehglish Lit and write for the local newspaper. I also have my own sales business.
Perhaps we can write--those of us who are educated, and perhaps we can't write. Either way, I believe you're correct. It's not about elegant writing, but about the fine art of persuasion.
And that's where a good background in writing and sales comes in quite handy.
Thanks for all the wonderful articles you send out there. I have a file dedicated just to you on my computer.
For all the good you do, may you be compensated a thousand-fold and may you have a peaceful and joyful new year.

Cool article. I found the logical argument tactic being used in alot of conversations especially with children, teens, and even couples.

I didn't really believe how often everyone uses these persuasion tactics until I observed the people around me.

Then, I decided to see what would happen between and friend and me during a conversation. I wanted him to buy a video game for me last Saturday since he couldn't give me a gift for my birthday and Christmas this month.

I used a logical argument:

*I threw in little facts we both already knew,

*reason why he should buy the gift immediately,

*and asked him to visualize me being happy with the game and not annoying him later for not buying a gift.

*The sense of relief and less headaches would be a comfort to him.

Did I get my game? YES...especially when the idea of relief from nagging came to mind.

So, if I did this with a simple conversation, can you imagine what these techniques can do in an article or a copy? The results will be amazing.

Give it a try and, while you're at it, just listen to people's conversations. What Clayton is saying really makes alot of sense.

We do this so much in our lives everyday.
It's no wonder these tactics are overlooked.

My wife and I raised nine kids. I was thinking this morning about how most business websites do nothing to persuade visitors to buy and recalled my oldest daughter -- now the mother of eight (in another couple of weeks) -- used to smile and nod her head in agreement as she set about to convince me I should do some certain thing she wanted.

She knew what she was doing, and knew that I knew. :-)

Then I got to thinking how everything you need to know about persuasion, you can learn by paying attention to your kids -- or others if you haven't discovered the advantages of having your own.

Then along comes Clayton, and puts it on over the top.

Great job!

But one thing...

About that gold stuff.

I saw guys where I worked sinking their life savings into gold back in 1979 or so when they thought it was headed for the moon. As I recall, it topped around $512/ounce or so.
This year there's been talk about gold eventually reaching $2000! And what a safe haven that will be!

One problem: Take $512 in 1979, multiply it by about 6 or 8 to accommodate inflation, and you'll be upside-down in gold until it gets well past $3000/ounce, and that's with zero ROI on the money you sunk into the metal nearly 30 years ago!

It's enough to make even Social Security look good.

Reminds me of a verse in the Good Book -- something about "woe unto him who trusteth in silver and gold" ...

Sorry -- couldn't resist. After all, what's a rabble-rouser for, eh? :-)
