It’s Our Birthday …
And YOU Get the Presents!
Dear Business-Builder,
This month, The Total Package will celebrate its fourth birthday – time to take stock …
Since I wrote our first article ‘way back in June of 2005, we’ve published nearly 700 issues containing an estimated 3,500 pages and a guestimated 1.4 million words – all to help you get bigger winners, more often.
That’s nearly three times more words than you’ll find in the hardcover edition of Tolstoy’s epic War and Peace. And every page of The Total Package e-letter has been packed with practical, “how-to-do-it” help others charge a king’s ransom for.
They include eye-opening interviews packed to the rafters with inspired marketing ideas from many of our generation’s direct response marketing legends: People like the great Drayton Bird, Joe Sugarman, Ted Nicholas, Rodale and AOL marketing genius, Pat Corpora and others.
To help you create more effective sales copy, we’ve grilled superstar copywriters like Gary Bencivenga, Jim Rutz, Eric Betuel, Parris Lampropoulos, Kent Komae, Carline Anglade-Cole, Bob Hutchinson, David Deutsch, Doug D’Anna, John Carlton, Bob Bly and many others.
We’ve brought you the marketing wisdom of Brian Kurtz, Rich Schefren, Perry Marshall, Jeff Walker, Yanik Silver, Michael Masterson, MaryEllen Tribby, Ken Evoy, Michel Fortin, Charlie Byrne, Bob Serling, Derek Gehl, Rob Davis, Martin Weiss and of course, the blindingly brilliant weekly insights of Daniel Levis and Troy White.
The Total Package has covered the waterfront with advice on personal motivation … business organization and management … product development and selection … offer creation … media selection and list segmentation … graphic design … new prospect and customer acquisition methods … house file maximization techniques … secrets of search engine optimization … pay-per-click advertising … e-mail marketing … time-saving strategies and productivity-enhancement … navigating the legal and regulatory maze … tips for attracting high-paying clients for copywriters and consultants …
Oh yeah … and we’ve covered every imaginable aspect of copywriting, too.
All at no cost to you.
The Redhead and I have spent more than $700,000 of our own money plus 100% of the profits our products have generated to bring you this site, to attract new readers and to develop new products to help you succeed.
So far, that investment has earned us precisely zero dollars – and that’s by design. From the beginning, we resolved to reinvest all profits generated by this site in ad campaigns and products designed to help more folks succeed in this business.
Our compensation is far more rewarding than mere money: Our readers in 76 countries around the world have flooded our blog and inboxes with more than 1,200 “Thank-You” notes and testimonials raving about how The Total Package and the 19 coaching products in our online store have helped grow your businesses and put more money into your pocket.
This is our way of giving back to the industry that has been so good to me over the past four decades. Knowing we’ve made a substantial, measurable difference in your business’ success is reward enough.
So now, I have a question for you – and frankly, it’s the same question I first asked our first subscribers four years ago this month …
How can we better help you?
Just ask. We’re here for you.
Tell us what would best help accelerate your success and we’ll move heaven and earth to give it to you in the months ahead.
Which direct marketing topics would help you most? What kinds of podcasts, videos and live events would help you take a giant step forward? Is there a type of contest, club, live conference or anything else that would help you obliterate the obstacles you’re struggling with now?
Simply scroll down and use the comments to ask. Here at The Total Package, your wish is our command.
Yours for Bigger Winners, More Often,

Clayton,
Thank you for the excellent information you’ve provided. I have found you site to be very useful and I refer to it often. I even have met Troy White though this site and am learning and working with him.
You asked so here is what I would like to see.
A step by step process to building a list of targeted leads in a particular niche.
Thanks Clayton.

Clayton, happy B Day man! Thanks for this wealth of resources-it is awesome. Perhaps more of the technical teaching is needed-the actual teaching such as the Easy Rider newsletter provides. Just a thought-

Maybe some video tutorials about how you organize your day and weeks. How you plan projects and break them down into steps. That would be awesome! Thanks for the great content.

Dear Clayton:
Special Request: I would love to have a Desktop Style Copy Coach for Internet/Web Style sales letters to compliment my Ultimate Desktop Copy Coach. In the Ultimate Desktop Copy Coach there is awesome information that can be used for the web, but I would love to see a Killer Kick - ____ binder on “How to write Killer Web Sales Letters.”
That is it!
Sweet, simple and to the point.
I have Yanik Silver’s, Internet Copywriting Workshop, 4 binders, over 1200 pages, but they are all examples of great web sales letters and do not go through the nuts and bolts of how to write a web sales letter like you do direct marketing sales letters in the Ultimate Desktop Copy Coach.
I also have AWAI’s Nick Usborne’s Million Dollar Secrets to Online Copywriting, but again this is too broad and not razor targeted and super focused like your products.
I have the AWAI’s 6 Figure Copywriting Course and the Web Design Course, but again, they are not focused on web sales letters which are my bread and butter.
In today’s world web copywriters are working with increasingly hesitant online buyers, with the result of lower conversions on web sales letters for ebooks, courses, seminars and related Internet Business Products. I feel web copywriters do not have a nuts and bolts, rock-solid course to assist them in writing web sales letters that convert.
There are a lot of “wannta be” web copywriting courses that I have invested in which were not as much help to me as your Ultimate Desktop Copy Coach is.
So Clayton, that is my challenge to you!
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this special request. You build it and I will buy it.
Regards,
Jennie Heckel

Hi, I’m new to your newsletter, love the info - found it through listening to the fabulous interview you did with Daniel Lewis (which got me to buy his product). (Also especially love Gary Bencivenga’s Bullets.)
I’m not a copywriter - except for my writings (ideas as well as creative works). Since I’m not a copywriter I have all the more to learn about drawing people in to subscribe, etc. Over the past 3 years I’ve taken on learning how to get visible on the web - and this month my site should pass 40,000 page views per month.
Now, copywriting … I am learning. Over the past month or so, opt-ins have more than tripled. Nothing much. But a start.
What could I use most right now? More strategies on how to get people to subscribe.
Elsa (who is taking the next year “off” to really give her site full attention.)
And again, thanks for being there.

Thank you for sharing so much valuable information with us.
This really is a Top resource for copywriters everywhere.
From my years of studying the concepts and techniques of sales and copywriting there are 2 things I could recommend.
These 2 learning resources seem to be hard to find and
would be extremely helpful to us out there trying to learn the craft of persuasion.
1)I clicked a link for a Michel Fortin offer that led you to a free audio critique sample of an actual phone critique with an owner of a small business (who attempted to write his own copy). I find any “before and afters”, actual critiques that show the improvement or point out the mistakes are a VERY valuable part of the learning process. It would be great to see more of that!
2) The other suggestion would be more of a “smaller format”
approach to an ad. It seems like everything is geared more for the “sales letter” format. I know for my business I do a lot of oversized postcards and small direct mail pieces.
and when first sitting down to create in a medium with that small amount of physical space to communicate and persuade
becomes a challenge. This would help many small businesses and creators of persuasive communication.
Talk to me about being Convincing on an 8.5″ x 5.5″ space
and I’ll buy that book.
Thanks for everything,I anxiously await to see these solutions in the near future.

Once again, you’re giving more. Thank you for that a thousand times over.
Since you’re asking, I’d love to see your version of a stand alone step by step checklist for letter writing. If you’ve never used one - or don’t anymore - I’d love to see you make one.
I know you have x number of points in this program and x number of steps in that program, but a simplified, stand alone sheet would be awesome.
Happy B’Day Total Package! Thanks for everything!

Clayton,
Happy B-Day to The Total Package!
Every time a new copywriter asks me their first question about the business…the FIRST place I send them is here to subscribe, then one other site.
As for a suggestion…
I understand you’re a busy guy…really busy…but perhaps a weekly or bi-weekly “Clayton’s Corner” would be a nice addition to this already fantastic newsletter.
It would be a “behind the scenes” appropriate look at YOUR business frustrations, analysis, and marketing ideas that YOU are implementing yourself, and written by you.
Doesn’t have to be long, I would enjoy a tiny peek inside a multi-million dollar copywriting business.
Your Total Package is the model for us to follow…keep it up.

I’d like to second (and third)JohnQ’s request for help in writing copy for small ads, postcards, jumbo postcards.
We do lots of postcards to generate store traffic, visits to the cleint’s web sites, or leads for B2B products.
Without the space of a 24-page magalog, how do we try to acheive results with limited space? When are graphics/pictures as important as copy? One fact about direct mail cards, they always get a 1-2 second scan review before being pitched. How do we explode the scan review into red hot interest?

Comment by Jeff Veesenmeyer — June 8, 2009 @ 12:40 pm
I’d be interested in response statistics from test mailings. Especally any that were a total surprise due to a copywriting gimmick, offer or maybe an emotional angle. Stats that caused you to change a control or add a method to your copywriting arsenal.
I add a nugget of knowledge to my arsenal with every issue. Thanks.

Hey Clayton,
Ads for information products are more difficult to write than an ad for an ordinary item like visiting a restaurant.
I’d like to see examples of simple ads like resumes, pitches to come in to a restaurant, or use a coffee shop.
Is learning how to write an information product ad like trying to play Beethoven’s fifth symphony before you learn chopsticks?
Thanks Clayton for the great advice!

Congrats on the anniversary.
I wish I had more guidance, but you guys do such a bang up job everyday.

Thanks again.

So again… Happy Birthday and may you have many more!

Clayton, Wendy, and Staff
A big THANK YOU is just not enough.
What got me into the Total Package is buying trashy direct response courses on TV and then being left out in the cold… not knowing what to do. Those three scoundrels: Don Lapre, Brad Richdale, and the latest numb-nut Jeff Paul.
The TP really opened my eyes to the REALITY of this industry. The free stuff beats what is sold on TV alone. My understanding of Direct Marketing and copywriting has exploded.,you can still smell the smoke and residue on me. I’ve read TP articles until my eyes were bleeding…and I like it!
Clayton, I know you have more secrets hiding in that massive mind of yours…
- What do you know about those marketers who are running display ads for supplements and other products. I always see them in Sunday’s Parade Magazine. I’m almost ready to approach them with a re-write or two, thanks to the Total Package and it’s products.
Would you consider making a course on Display Ads?
Things desired:
-Weekly copy exercises would kick ass.
-Copy contests for the big TP Products would be a real treat.
-Add a Graphic Design section… where we could show off our own work. So many nice folks are making mistakes in this area.
-Add a Networking Section- TP readers could help each other with our individual talents.
Love Ya Clayton,
John Babin of

Happy Birthday to Total Package.
Thank you Clayton, all the staff at Total Package & all guest writers. You’ve all done a fantastic job keeping your readers reading by providing top notch information on copywriting & direct mail.
Clayton, if you were to start afresh in this business now, what would you do to earn maximum of money in the minimum amount of time?
Your insight will be appreciated about how to adapt the high level of direct mailings you do for large mailers to a smaller business.
Please give an outline and sequence of the tasks and timeline of key activities that a direct mailer needs to consider when marketing a product for maximum results.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WHOLE TEAM AT THE TOTAL PACKAGE!!
You provide an amazing service in so many different respects.
To add to the list, more of the copy critiquing sessions like we just had for the program to help people stop drinking. That was a great challenge and I learned so much from my fellow/sister writers.
I’d like to see a few copy critiques from you Clayton. Showing a before and after type thing with the process of your thoughts as you look at something step by step to improve it.
I also vote for a program more geared to Web writing specifically that Jennie requested. Though I would expand that to include more of the parts to flesh out a whole campaign online- not just the sales letter.
Thank You for years of incredibly valuable information.

Happy birthday Clayton & Gang
The amount of money and dedication you guys are pouring into the TP is showing BIG TIME.
The TP is by far the best resource for copywriting know how on the web.
Thanks, we are all in your debt.
And here is my request…
I would like a way to learn and practice (emphasis on practice) copywriting on the web, without uprooting my family and joining an advertising agency as a copy cub).
You see, I live in Israel and I doubt the US government will grant me a work visa just because I want to become a copywriter.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that advertising managers will prefer native English speakers as copy cubs and…
I am pretty sure that my kids (3 and 5) and my wife would not agree to live without food or housing for the time it will take me to learn the copywriting ropes.
So…
“Learn and practice web-copywriting without joining an advertising agency”
If you build it, I will buy it.

(my posts have disappeared again…)
I made a post but it seems to have disappeared, here’s
what I can remember…
A “Copywriting Class” Section:
This is a place where copywriting babies can hone their
skills and become better through guidance from you
or someone you’ve certified to lead copywriting babies, new
to the craft through exercises to become better writters.
A “Copy Like Clayton” Section:
Directly teach us through a training series to become
as good a writer as you are.
This is either through an e-course or some form of
offline materials then online submission of exercises
and tests.
That’s all I can remember.
Thank you for breathing Clayton and team…
Peacefully,
I.A.

Happy Birthday Clayton, Wendy, and Gang,
Your website is a pot o’ gold. Interesting and fun.
I was just wondering, what tool or technique did you most struggle with or have a difficult time finding an answer for, if any? when you were a cub copywriter. After visiting TP a few times, I think you developed your own techniques from the beginning. . . they must have been successful, so what were they? Just one or two you started with.
You’re a genie and a genius. WOW. What more could a learning copywriter ask for?
I enjoy this website because it is focused and real.
Thank you,
Patricia

Happy Birthday and Congratulations!
I’m new here - but what I’d like to see is a “conception to delivery” step by step process or system to take an idea, create a “product” (sales letter, ad, article, etc…) and take it all the way to publication to the web. Nuts and bolts. Delivery via website, download links, autoresponder?
Wishing you continued success

Happy Birthday to the Total Package, and thanks for all the great info, and guest authors.
I’d like to see more about writing effective bullet points, and maybe some thoughts about how to decide whether a subheading or bullet is better in a particular piece of copy.
Sometimes I am not sure which to use, so any thoughts about how to use bullet points and subheads most effectively would be a big help.
Thanks again, and congrats all around.

And MIMI: Happy Birthday, girl — I love you! Give the grandbabies big hugs from me.

Can you say P-A-R-T-Y?
Cheers, y’all!

Hey Clayton, Wendy, Martha and the rest of the fine crew members at The Total Package,
Firstly, Happy Birthday to TTP! You guys just flat out, in a word, ROCK.
Remember me Clayton? I was one of the humble winners of the contest for Best Blog Post, promoting TTP (this is me being humble evidently :). The prize I chose was The Ultimate Desktop Copy Coach (yes, I chose this over the Power Marketing DVD Collection and many thought I was insane!).
The materials are top grade, as is everything Clayton puts out (the Redhead might have a different opinion on that one) and reading the Total Package ezine has been a Godsend to my career. Without question, it helped me land a $70,000 a year copywriting job with the leading manufacturer of home & building automation systems here in NJ.
Since you give your readers pretty much everything we could possibly want, it’s tough to think of something more to ask for!
I guess if I had to choose, I’d love for TTP to keep the tips coming on how to get more clients and on what to charge. But I’m just being greedy here, Lord knows you’ve already given us great strategies on those topics. Just don’t stop ‘em!
Luv you guys! And, be careful on the hog, Clayton.
All my best,
Jim Rodante

First of all Clayton, I so enjoy your “political” views! I totally agree! I enjoy them as much as I enjoy all the awesome value you give to your readers on copy writing.
I guess the only thing I would like to see more of would be contests to win a free critique by you. How does any of us know if we have what it takes to make a nice income if we can’t share our work with any of the “Real Guys?”
Really, thank you all so much for an outstanding job!

Happy Birthday to The Total Package!
I truly appreciate all the information you and your guests provide…for FREE!
The only suggestion I can think of for making this already great newsletter better is: to offer up your scraps!
Surely you must get a great deal of copywriting opportunities that come to your door that you must turn away. And certainly there are competent copywriters here reading this who could well serve these cash poor, yet deserving, clients.
Why not serve them up, as a challenge to the skills of your readers?
Many happy returns of the day Clayton, Wendy, Troy, Daniel,

My heartfelt thanks Clayton to you, Wendy, Martha and Daniel. Just when I think I’ve absorbed the latest nuggets on ‘how to be a successful and fantastic copywriter’, you throw me another invaluable piece of infromation.
I am so delighted to have met you and Wendy when you came to AWAI and have been tempted to pack it all in and come sit at your feet in NC.
Keep it coming especially the ‘breakdowns’ on getting your copy read and followed through to the sale.

Happy Birthday Total Package & Crew (including you Clayton!).
I know I’m a bit late with this post, but what I’d like to have is a totally open forum where … everyone in this group can TEAR COPY TO SHREDS!!!
From what I’ve noticed here on The Total Package:
* everyone is so keen to help each other out
* some of us need a bit of confidence building
* some of us need some fresh eyes on copy we’ve written.
Why not accomplish all the above in a forum where we can crit each others work - and submit work of our own for an honest critique? … TEAR IT TO SHREDS - then make it better!
The knowledge in this group is awesome! A forum where we all can practice - both writing and critiquing real-world copy would be an invaluable treasure.
We will all learn by writing copy and doing crits.
In any case, I would rather have my copy “critiqued” by the people I trust here, than by the world out there, or by so-called friends who only say nice things about my work.
Happy birthday again, and thanks for the presents!
